What an odd thing to brag about:

More money collected from taxpayers than ever before, the result of increased in taxes, fees, and fines.

And there's still a projected budget deficit of $3.2 Billion for 2026.

The Illinois debt is around $158 Billion.

There's less money coming from Washington and if Fata$$ continues to give ILLEGAL aliens Medicare in violation of Federal Law, all those numbers are going to go up even more.

But yeah, brag about what taxpayers are being forced to pay.

* The Budget Bill has past and Donald Trump is signing it on the 4th of July as if it isn't a terrible and shameful thing that will kill people who voted him so a handful of billionaires can pay fewer taxes.

People die because they won't be able to afford the copays, especially as Trump economic policies kill jobs and keep causing prices to rise.

People die because most of the remaining rural hospitals will close as they need Medicaid money to survive. Slapping a temporary Bandaid on the funding bleed won't save them as the amount is minuscule compared to what they are losing.

They are sacrificing people for the billionaires that bought them.

They are stealing healthcare from 11.8 million in the near future about a third of them children.

3 Million people, 1 Million of them children, will lose food assistance.

They are making the bottom 10% of Americans 4% Poorer.

This is all so they can make the Wealthiest 10% 2.3% richer.

The goal of this legislation is to harm or kill as many ordinary people as possible while ballooning the deficit by 3.3 directly over the next decade by giving tax cuts to billionaires, but more likely 4.45 trillion if one considers things like interest. (Republicans have decided to no longer count the billionaire tax cuts and related interest costs because the real figures make them look bad. Lying that a 4 trillion increase is a $508 billion decrease is better for them politically).

A budget is a moral document. It says what a society's priorities are.

Not all deficit is bad. Deficit to invest in things like education or health or infrastructure is good for obvious reasons. This deficit is entirely about sucking money out of the economy and into billionaire bank accounts. It gives nothing back; it only harms.

* So Saturday, I wrapped up the aggregate, then started posting more links in the hour or so before bed.

Livia, who is really not doing well with all the disruption went on the lemon laptop instead of around it, as she normally would. sat on it about 30 seconds, then jostled it jumping over the back.

It black screened. I’ve tried everything. I can see the Lenovo logo on restart, but it just gives flash of the lockscreen before blacking out. Tech support hung up on me in the middle and went home on Sunday.

So far I’ve invested about eight hours trying to resuscitate it. Two friends have tried as well.

All the links, all the data are locked in there.

I still have the refurbished lap top, which is what I’m writing on now. I hadn’t the heart to try to start over, especially while rebooting Edward Laptop over and over, etc.. It’s harder to work on this one for a variety of reasons.

If Edward is really done, I will start again. On top of the not enough sleep. (I got four hours today as it seems the sofa cushion foam may be deteriorated to the point that the metal will grind my hip every time I try to sleep). On top of having to use all the spoons every day trying to cope with construction hell. On top of every other thing.

Restarting all the news set up things on this computer means I will be even slower on news, etc., likely for a few weeks. It takes a while to migrate functions and re-establish work flow. This computer is a little slower and also isn’t quite up to hosting modern waterfox, which means figuring out how to do things without.

This month has been an absolute nightmare.

* Monday: The fire inspector came along with the nice man who did the fire upgrade part at 10:30. They were gone at 10:37. The fire inspector praised the guy who did the installation, which made me happy. He had this warm, gentle vibe and a soft spoke competence that reminded me a lot of my beloved late Uncle, though they looked nothing alike.

After I ate, I started in with the phone. new Millennial was having trouble claiming their home care aide hours (They worked them, but the whole system is super glitchy). Today is the last day to fix it. New Millennial is getting most of my hours. we are going to try to hire someone to do the heavier lifting jobs once a week, like taking out the trash with the rest of the hours. Because of the employment change over, I needed to make sure the trouble wasn't to do with that. *digits cruciform it is sorted now*

Then it was back to trying to ave Edward Lap top. I and New Millennial and [profile] steampunktoy put in about nine hours total trying to save him Saturday and Sunday. I went back to try to trick tech support AI into letting me talk to a live human. Apparently the trick is just to say nonsense until it gives up. I got really good results reading to it from the Dracula Daily Tumblr feed which was weirdly way faster than just repeated things like live agent and advanced technical support and I refuse to do that. This took a few tries to get it right. I wasted one by foolishly cooperating and that just kicked it into sales mode. I got through and the phone cut out on our end during transfer to advanced technical support. Whee!

I fucking hate GenAI I do not like this outwit the sphinx aspect of everything nowadays. Oooo! I wonder if the tumblr trick works on Social Security chat bots! Let's hop I don't have to find out this year.

The third tech support guy walked me through some things, but odds are it's the same hardware problem from when Lenovo decided to enshitify. They wanted me to mil it back, which I don't know how to do and don't have the box for and the diagnostic is over a hundred and fuck that. I got him to suggest I take it to Best Buy.

So I guess I'm doing that in a car that now smokes if I take on the highway for repairs of an unknown amount.

It is still better than buying a new computer, I suspect.

Fuck! I got this new in January.

We can't afford this monetarily. I can't afford all these spoons. I got six hours of sleep today and four yesterday and I feel like I'm getting beaten with baseball bats in my "sleep" every night. I've started dreaming of scorpions which I just realized are likely symbolic reinterpretation of the damned sprinklers that are the reason they are doing this terrible thing to me and the cats. Like, every time I see the scorpion in my dream, I think: that is a weird pattern for a scorpion's collaboration, yet strangely familiar. It's the sprinkler head abstracted. It's kind of beautiful.

Tavy clings and claws and bites. Livia panics if she can't instantly see me. The tiny meeps of terror break my heart. I am literally just on the other side of the debris, but if that's not where she suspected, she makes those lost kitten sounds.

On the upside, the aggregate scaffold transferred fine. It usually does even without the fail safe of it being open somewhere else to check against, but now and then I end up with an empty page, so I held off opening it until I had no choice. I have no choice.

As I said in the Sunday entry, starting from scratch on news links on a different computer is a pain in the ass, and I'm a browser down, so I'm focusing on essential action item type things and the like right now.

I am so sorry. We have hit my too many things broken limit.

* UPDATE 3:44PM

Squirrel was able to take over Contractor watch so I went out into extreme heat and traffic to go to an in person repair.

It turned out to be a stupid easy fix. One they could have very easily talked me through at the official Lenovo technical support. One that only someone who knew about all the stupid ways enshittified Lenovos Black screen without warning would have known. Like someone at Lenovo tech support, one would think, but they were so fixated on making me reset or mail it back for hundreds of dollars of repair.

One none of us could have guessed, not even someone clever as Newest Millennial or [profile] steampunktoy.

Apparently enshittified Lenovos like to change their settings on their own to things no one would want so why is black screen even a setting, I must ask? Why? Why program a computer to black screen itself? WTF, Lenovo!

The car made it home. Let us hope it starts again.

I dropped off the half dead TV in the place that used to take them, but apparently just stopped. (It was on the way back from TV repair and needed doing. The lady took pity on my barely mobile and tempting heat stroke self with a car more than a decade older than her assistant, I'd guess, and took the TV anyway. "Just this once." I promised never again.

Let us hope the other ancient second hand tv lives a good long life as we can't throw them out either.

Everyone was so terribly kind.

* Wednesday: Not surprisingly, the pain was Extra. Still no contractors today. I did get a call from the citty program. My vote was today and the City is going ahead with the fixes.

I am fascinated to see how this works out with HOA Hell Project.

* Thursday: I slipped out while the contractors were at lunch for produce. I figured they likely wouldn't come today as I hadn't heard construction all week, and I wanted to slip out while the temperature was still reasonable and before the after work crowd came shopping for long weekend provisions. I was late getting back, as I zipped down to the library while i was out which meant I could hit discount grocery. This was a good call as yoghurt and mushrooms were on sale, and not just the normal mushrooms, but two kinds of fancier ones that i like for soup and pasta.

I hope it's all right.

It broke my heart a little when I took the pride flags down as this is likely the last time I'll get to have them up. They were so cheerful, you know. I am fighting the pride ban. Of course I am, but management is utterly unreasonable on all accounts.

Despite the heat, the pinwheels in my patio garden have been going gangbusters since yesterday. It is still and oven down town of course, but I live in a wind tunnel, that funnels the breeze out of Alaska, which helps some.

Monday and Tuesday the sky was uncanny valley empty again. I should be used to this as climate change has been doing this half a decade now.

Today though? Normal for July wispy clouds high up and headed off the Bay towards the mountains as it should be.

A Chicago man has been jailed after allegedly robbing a 14-year-old boy of his iPhone, gym shoes, and hoodie at a West Side bus stop—then getting beaten up by the victim’s relatives when they tracked him down minutes later.

Dnario Brown, 18, is charged with robbery in connection with the June 16 incident, which unfolded near a bus stop at Roosevelt Road and Central Park Avenue, according to a Chicago Police Department arrest report and court documents reviewed by CWBChicago.

Authorities said the 14-year-old was walking at 2:40 p.m. on June 16 when four males approached him. One of the men asked for his sweater. When the boy ignored them and kept walking, the same man allegedly picked him up, prompting the boy to punch him in defense. A second man then allegedly rifled through the boy’s pockets and stole his phone, while others took his Nike gym shoes and hoodie—items the CPD report said were worth between $1,200 and $1,450.

Brown (CCSO)

The teen ran barefoot to his grandmother’s home nearby, and police were notified shortly afterward, according to the arrest report.

Part of the attack was caught on video, prosecutors said in a detention proffer. Surveillance footage reportedly showed the boy fleeing the scene without his shoes and entering his grandmother’s house. It also captured two of the suspected offenders running into a building in the 3600 block of West Grenshaw Street, while the other two fled down an alley.

The victim told his mother he recognized one of the robbers by a tattoo above his left eyebrow and said he remembered seeing the man at a facility where his mother works. She identified that person as Dnario Brown, according to police.

About five minutes after the robbery, the boy and his mother went to the home where two of the suspects had been seen entering. There, the teen recovered his iPhone and hoodie. Brown was then “beaten up by members of [the boy’s] family,” said the proffer

During a bond hearing, Judge Ankur Srivastava ordered Brown held in custody pending trial. According to the judge’s detention order, Brown has four prior arrests for violent crimes and was already facing charges in an unrelated pending case at the time of the robbery.

Brown is due back in court later this month.

A violent armed robbery crew that has been terrorizing Chicago’s Near West Side neighborhoods over the past three days is now linked to at least eight holdups—and police say the offenders are showing no signs of stopping.

In several cases, the robbers demanded phone passcodes and resorted to violence, pistol-whipping their targets before fleeing.

The most recent attack unfolded just before 11:20 a.m. Friday, when three people—two men, ages 32 and 46, and a 43-year-old woman—were robbed at gunpoint while sitting in a red car in the 300 block of North Laflin in the West Loop.

A nearby surveillance camera captured the entire scene: A gray Infiniti Q50 backed into a parking spot in front of the victims’ vehicle. Seconds later, two masked men jumped out, sprinted to both sides of the victims’ car, and ordered them to hand over their belongings. The robbers made off with the victims’ items and fled southbound on Laflin. No injuries were reported.

A surveillance image shows two armed robbers targeting victims in a red vehicle in the 300 block of North Laflin on July 4, 2025. (Fulton Market Association)

Roughly an hour earlier, in Logan Square, a 32-year-old woman was standing near an alley in the 2700 block of North Milwaukee when a dark-colored sedan pulled up beside her around 10:15 a.m. Three masked men armed with guns jumped out and demanded her property. She complied, and the trio fled northbound through the alley. Like the Laflin robbery, the woman was not injured.

By Saturday afternoon, Chicago police had issued a second community alert, linking both of those robberies to a string of similar incidents stretching back to early Thursday morning.

The spree began around 7 a.m. Thursday in West Town, where a woman was walking in the 1400 block of West Carroll when three masked men jumped out of a sedan. Without warning, they pistol-whipped her twice in the head and robbed her at gunpoint. The offenders fled with her phone and purse.

Roughly three hours later, around 10 a.m., two people were targeted inside a parking garage at Rush University Medical Center in the 1500 block of West Harrison. Police said two men dressed entirely in black, both armed with handguns, confronted the victims on the garage’s ground floor and stole a Coach bag and maroon backpack before fleeing in a car matching the same description.

On Friday morning, the robbers returned to West Town. Around 7:40 a.m., a man was held up in the 1200 block of West Carroll by three masked offenders—two of them armed—who fled in a gray sedan after taking valuables from the victim. Just 40 minutes later, at 8:21 a.m., two men wearing ski masks jumped out of a similar car and threatened a woman with firearms. In that case, the robbery was unsuccessful, and the suspects fled empty-handed.

They struck again less than an hour later—twice. At 9:14 a.m., a victim was robbed in the 800 block of West Blackhawk. Twelve minutes after that, a second robbery attempt occurred in the 900 block of West Weed Street near Goose Island. In both cases, the same stolen gray Infiniti was used, and the suspects matched the descriptions from previous attacks.

In all, police say the offenders—believed to be two to four Black males between 16 and 25 years old—are using a stolen gray Infiniti Q50 and swapping out stolen license plates to avoid detection. Victims have reported that the robbers often wear dark hooded sweatshirts and black ski masks.

CPD reiterated its standard safety guidance in the community alert: Do not resist during a robbery. Try to observe physical details about the offenders—such as scars, limps, or unique clothing—but do not pursue them. If you witness an incident, stay on the scene and provide information to police.

Anyone with information about the robberies is urged to contact Area Three detectives at 312-744-8263 or submit an anonymous tip at CPDTIP.com in reference to crime pattern #P25-3-032.

Chicago police surround an SUV in the 300 block of East Wacker Drive on July 5, 2025. CPD believes the driver, who is in custody, shot and killed a victim on the Near North Side. (Citizen App)

A man is in custody for a deadly shooting on Chicago’s Near North Side after officers heard gunfire, spotted the suspect casually walking away with a cane, and tracked him to the Loop using surveillance cameras and license plate readers.

The shooting unfolded just before 9:50 a.m. Saturday in the 800 block of North Cambridge Avenue. A 46-year-old man, sitting inside a Chevy Suburban, was ambushed by a gunman who walked up and opened fire in broad daylight.

Officers in an unmarked CPD vehicle nearby initially mistook the gunfire for fireworks—until the victim, bleeding and desperate, drove up to them for help. Despite their efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene with multiple gunshot wounds to his back, police said.

As the officers looked around, they spotted a man limping away from the area using a cane. Officers in CPD’s Near North (18th) District reviewed nearby camera feeds and determined the suspect fled in an Audi Q7.

Using license plate readers, police tracked the vehicle’s movements into the Loop. The suspect’s car became disabled after he crashed into several cars near Michigan and Wacker around 10:17 a.m., and officers quickly took him into custody. A firearm was recovered from the vehicle.

Saturday’s victim is the 33rd person shot on the Near North Side this year. That includes 18 people who were wounded in a single drive-by outside Artis Lounge, 311 West Chicago Avenue, on Wednesday night.

Here’s how that compares to year-to-date totals in recent years:
2025: 33
2024: 15
2023: 14
2022: 38
2021: 18
2020: 15
2019: 21

Note: CWBChicago includes individuals shot during police-involved shootings and unintentional self-inflicted gunshot wounds in its shooting statistics.

Jonas Alcala-Arteaga, left, and Yunior Amaro-Blanco (Chicago Police Department, ARC Music Festival)

One of two Venezuelan migrants accused of robbing ARC Music Festival attendees of pricey gold chains last summer has been sent to prison — briefly. The other? He skipped court and disappeared.

Jonas Alcala-Arteaga, 31, was sentenced to one year in prison after recently cutting a plea deal with prosecutors. Chicago police arrested him at Union Park on September 1, 2024, during the festival, a major electronic music event that draws thousands.

A 37-year-old Schaumburg man told police someone stepped on his foot shortly after he entered the park around 6 p.m. When he confronted the person, Alcala-Arteaga allegedly ripped a gold chain and medallion from his neck and bolted, according to a CPD report.

The victim spotted Alcala-Arteaga again about 15 minutes later, but he ran off a second time. The third time was the charm: when the man encountered him yet again, Alcala-Arteaga tried to flee — and face-planted. The victim held him until security arrived.

At the time, Alcala-Arteaga was already on pretrial release for felony possession of a stolen car. But in a deal with prosecutors, he was allowed to plead guilty to downgraded charges: felony possession of lost or mislaid property in the chain-snatching case and misdemeanor criminal trespass in the auto case.

Judge James Novy sentenced him to one year for the theft and 180 days for the trespassing, to be served concurrently. But Alcala-Arteaga had already logged 284 days in Cook County Jail, so he only spent four days in state prison before being released, according to the Illinois Department of Corrections.

About an hour after that incident, another man — Yunior Amaro-Blanco, 25 — allegedly grabbed a 25-year-old festivalgoer and yanked two gold chains worth $6,000 from his neck. That victim quickly tackled Amaro-Blanco and held him until security arrived, according to a separate CPD report. One of the chains was recovered.

Amaro-Blanco, also charged with robbery, stopped showing up for court in March. A judge issued a warrant for his arrest in April, and he’s been on the run since.

Remember a week or two ago how we warned Conehead and others about hanging their hats on the so-called crime reduction? How bragging about a drop could come back and bite them in the ass?

These things are cyclical and are connected to too many other factors to predict any sort of short-term trends:

  • economic factors;
  • ethnic entanglements;
  • foreign drug wars affecting supply and demand - even border enforcement;
  • local gang battles over territory, rap music, disrespect;
  • changes in local / state laws letting criminals out....if they ever went in at all.

And in spite of what McCompstat told everyone, the weather affects crime.

Look at what happened in the middle of this week:

  • in 40 hours, 51 people got shot, 9 of those died.

If you want to brag about crime reductions, do it on 01 January about the previous year.

A lot of rumors popping in the comment sections. Here's another one:

  • SCC, Expect big changes next week. Superintendent is pissed off. No more outer vest cover!! Your bullet proof vest will be worn under the uniform shirt, no more cargo pants, or baseball caps. No more gym shoes, only shoes that you can shine. Duty belt will be the leather one, no more nylon duty belts.

Going back to the old school uniform. The way we left the academy is how the Sup wants us to to look on the streets.

Either someone is bored or someone in charge is getting some heat from City Hall.

And before anyone starts whining about posting unverified rumors:

  • we said, almost from the first ever post, that Rumor Central was a thing here;
  • we've always used rumors that sound plausible as fodder for posts;
  • it's the holiday weekend and what else have we got?

Besides, many of the rumors end up being true in one form or another. Many times, the publication of rumors actually stopped stupid ideas from coming to fruition.

Who was it who warned years ago that LEMART Training would open up the Police Department to all sorts of liability, not to mention obligations (real or imagined) to treat persons injured? Was it something "insignificant" along with hundreds of their readers?

  • Just found out this little nugget for all the hard working and caring P.O.’S that transported victims to the hospital in that chaos Wed. My neighbor is a paralegal for a Law Firm that is already drafting up Law Suits against CPD for not waiting for CFD and BLAMING CPD for deaths and injuries…disgusting!

We'll confess, we don't really believe this one. The lawyers would have to prove transporting someone resulted in further injury, along with negligence and intent. We're told the ones who died weren't the ones transported, mostly because of the nature of the wounds (massive trauma).

The City and Department could solve the entire issue by using the LEMART training for what it was originally instituted for - saving an injured Officer's life.

Or by stopping training for chest seals, tourniquets, quick-clot and bandages and leave everything to the paramedics....who are understaffed, overworked and wasted on tummy-aches in certain neighborhoods.

A fire inspector from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives at the scene of a triple stabbing and arson fire that left a child dead and his siblings badly injured on July 4, 2025. (Kyle Mazza/UNF News)

A Logan Square mother is in police custody after allegedly stabbing her three children — killing her 4-year-old son — and setting their family home on fire in a shocking domestic attack Friday morning.

Officers responded to a “person with a knife” call at a house in the 3600 block of West Palmer Street just after 9 a.m. There, they encountered a chaotic and heartbreaking scene: a home engulfed in flames, a child screaming from a basement window, and reports that the children’s mother was still inside with a weapon.

“I got this child yelling for help down in the basement window,” one officer urgently radioed from the scene, according to dispatch records. “We’re trying to get her out the window. I do see blood… The mother’s supposed to be upstairs with a knife.”

Flames quickly consumed the home and spread to the neighboring building, where two adults — a 31-year-old woman and a 34-year-old man — suffered smoke inhalation. They were in fair condition at Stroger Hospital.

First responders found three children suffering from stab wounds in the original home. The youngest, identified by family members as 4-year-old Jordan Wallace, sustained a fatal stab wound to the chest. He was rushed to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Jordan’s 10-year-old brother was stabbed in the right arm and remains hospitalized in serious condition. Their 13-year-old sister suffered multiple stab wounds to the face, chest, and back. She is in critical condition.

Chicago police believe the children’s 45-year-old mother is responsible for the crime. She was taken into custody.

Three police officers who entered the burning building to rescue the children were also hospitalized for smoke inhalation. All are listed in fair condition.

The fire triggered a large emergency response, including agents from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, who were seen at the scene throughout the morning.

No charges have been announced as of Friday evening.

A series of bold, early-morning armed robberies from the West Loop to the United Center have police on the hunt this Fourth of July weekend, searching for a group of masked men believed to be behind a weeks-long string of violent holdups.

The latest crime sprees began around 7 a.m. Thursday, July 3, in the 1400 block of West Carroll Avenue in West Town. Police say three masked men jumped out of a sedan and pistol-whipped a woman twice in the head before robbing her at gunpoint. They made off with her bag and phone, fleeing in the vehicle.

Just over three hours later, around 10:12 a.m., two people were robbed inside a parking garage at Rush University Medical Center in the 1500 block of West Harrison Street. According to a police report, two men dressed entirely in black and armed with guns confronted the victims on the ground floor of the garage, taking a Coach bag and a maroon backpack before fleeing in the vehicle.

Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators revealed the suspects were driving a gray Infiniti Q50 with a broken sunroof and stolen license plates. A vehicle matching that description has been linked to other robberies in the area in recent weeks, according to a source familiar with the investigation.

On Friday, July 4, the same crew is believed to have returned — this time hitting three separate locations in just over an hour.

Around 7:15 a.m., outside a Chase Bank at 2317 West Madison Street, a man was held at gunpoint by two masked men who jumped out of a vehicle. The robbers took the victim’s wallet and $800 in cash. A third suspect, also involved, did not appear to be armed.

At approximately 7:45 a.m., just a couple from the previous day’s first robbery, another man was robbed at gunpoint in the 1200 block of West Carroll Avenue. Police say three men, two of them armed, escaped in a gray sedan after stealing valuables from the victim.

The suspects struck again just 30 minutes later, this time in Wicker Park, near Division and Paulina Streets. In this attempted robbery, two men wearing ski masks got out of a sedan and threatened a woman with firearms. However, they fled empty-handed.

While the license plates on the robbers’ getaway vehicle changed between Thursday and Friday, the car appeared to be the same.

The latest crimes closely resemble a pattern of armed robberies that prompted the Chicago Police Department to issue a community alert last month for residents in West Town and surrounding neighborhoods.

That alert warned of a crew of three robbers traveling by car, with two masked and hooded men jumping out to rob pedestrians at gunpoint. In at least one of those cases, a victim was pistol-whipped.

The suspects are described in the alert as Black males between 20 and 30 years old, standing 6 feet to 6’2” tall and weighing 140 to 170 pounds. They are typically seen wearing black ski masks and hooded sweatshirts.

I had someone sneak up behind me and intentionally startle me again yesterday — just when I thought I could relax. “Stick ’em up!” they laughed. A poke in my ribs. My heart pounded. Adrenaline surged like I was back in a fight for my life. My fists clenched. Then I smiled and played it […]

Leonard Johnson (Chicago Police Department)

A 26-year-old man with a violent criminal history and distinctive facial tattoos, including a crown and “RIP” inked on his face, is charged with aggravated robbery after allegedly mugging a passenger on an Orange Line train in the Loop, authorities said.

Leonard Johnson, a multiple-time convicted felon, was detained by Judge James Costello following a courtroom outburst where he threatened the assistant state’s attorney, leading to his removal mid-hearing.

Prosecutors detailed the incident in a detention petition, stating that Johnson blocked the train door, preventing a 27-year-old passenger from exiting as the train arrived at the station around 1 p.m. on June 18.

He allegedly implied he had a gun and demanded money from the victim, who handed over a $20 bill.

But, in a surprising twist, the man reconsidered and asked if Johnson would accept a $5 bill instead.

“You just got robbed,” Johnson allegedly replied while also taking the $5 bill.

The victim promptly contacted police, describing the robber as a man with “numerous face tattoos” featuring a crown and “RIP,” according to the detention petition. Investigators used that description, combined with CTA surveillance footage, to match the robber to Johnson’s old mugshots.

Last week, officers patrolling the 100 block of West Lake Street spotted Johnson and took him into custody.

At the time of the robbery, Johnson was on pretrial release for felony retail theft. Prosecutors said he just finished parole for a 2018 carjacking in Lincoln Park. His extensive criminal record also includes convictions for violent crimes as both a juvenile and an adult, prosecutors said.

In 2018, Johnson was identified in a CTA video as the “primary aggressor” in a group that surrounded a man on the Grand Red Line platform, demanded his wallet, and then tried to withdraw money from his accounts at the station’s ATM. He eventually received a 3-year prison sentence.

Two years and one day after that robbery, Johnson and two accomplices carjacked a 27-year-old man in the 900 block of West Armitage. Prosecutors said the men pulled the victim from his car, drove away with it, and then used his credit card at a gas station near Aurora. CPD detectives recognized Johnson (this may sound familiar) from the store’s video footage.
